Qualcomm had announced its latest smartphone flagship SoC "Snapdragon 845 (SD 845)".
This chip is said to be 30% faster than the Snapdragon 835 which is equipped with 2017 Android flagships. This SoC has improvements across the board, from a new processing technology to an improved modem. The press release mainly emphasized on multimedia, Virtual Reality (VR), and security.
SD 845 is built on Samsung's 10nm LPP FinFET with a new Kyro 385 CPU architecture and comes with an upgraded Adreno 630 GPU. This SoC is built on ARM's Cortex technology like the SD 835 and this is capable of delivering 25-30% performance uplift compared to SD 835.
As expected, this new design is based on ARM' s DynamIQ Technology and latest Cortex-A75 and A55 CPU designs. The bonus is the newly introduced 2MB shared L3 cache which improves memory sharing capabilities between different core types in the shared cluster.
The all-new Adreno 630 GPU supports displays up to 2K x 2K in resolution at up to 120 Hz for a fluid and crisp display. Besides this significant augmented and VR improvements bundled with this SoC. This chipset also includes tile rendering, eye tracking, and multi-view rendering. The SD 845 is the mobile platform to enable room scale 6 Degrees of freedom (6DoF) of movement, with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).
The SD 845 boasts three times better gain in AI performance and a 30% improvement in video rendering capabilities. Qualcomm came up with an onboard Aqstic audio codec WCD 9341 which offers low power monitoring of keyword detection and processing to increase the capabilities of virtual assistants.
On the multimedia side, Qualcomm’s latest Spectra image signal processor has been rebuilt from the ground up. The new Spectra 280 ISP introduces a number of new video capture options, including 480 fps slow motion 720p video, 60 fps video recording at up to 16 megapixels of resolution, and the ability to capture 64x more high-dynamic range with superior color information.
The SD 845 boasts an improved Wi-Fi modem and the Qualcomm's X20 LTE modem for faster than gigabit data speeds. The X20 LTE modem its Category 18 LTE compliant for up to 1.2 Gbps downloads and 150 Mbps uploads. This modem also supports License Assisted Access (LAA) for unlicensed spectrum, 5x carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO on up to 3 carriers, and dual SIM-dual VoLTE. On the WiFi side, there’s diversity-enhanced 60 GHz 802.11ad Wi-Fi for more robust multi-gigabit coverage at speeds up to 4.6 Gbps.
A new security feature is introduced by implementing a hardware isolated security sub-system in the SD 845 which is called as the Secure Processing Unit (SPU). The SPU acts as a vault for any saved biometric information such as fingerprint, face, and iris scan. this hardware can also be used to store user and applications security keys used for encryption besides the software encryption.
This SoC is already be seen in the flagships of 2018 as Galaxy S9 series and Sony's next flagship leaks confirm this information.
